First Impression: Residential Alienation

Consuming breakfast has a different meaning for me now as a grad student. 

This chapter about Residential Alienation (In Defense of Housing: The Politics of Crisis by David Madden and Peter Marcuse) is quite intriguing. True as it is written, residential alienation can be found across the world, and I do see a stark parallel to some of the situations in the public housing in Penang.

One of the Penang Urbanites post-screening discussion was about the deterioration of public housing at places like People's Court at Cintra Street and UDA flats in Tg Tokong. Looking forward to digging deeper into this paper and do a case study on it. Coincidentally, I found an interesting documentation of an oral history process of the People's Court on YouTube! Quirky but it gives one a realistic peek into the life of those whose meaning of 'feeling at home' is quite different from ours. Watch it here: Penang People’s Court
